Keys to a Successful Outcome
Avoid excessive loading or extreme movements during the recovery period.
Wear the required brace for the necessary time to restore proper patellar alignment.
Week 1-2: Gradually increased based on tolerance; AROM/AAROM/PROM
WBAT with knee immobilizer
Emphasis on full return of Knee Ext; Closed/open chain strength exercises; work on balance/proprioception
Patellar stabilizing brace
Progress ROM with goal of FAROM by 4-6 weeks
Progress Phase I exercises; incorporate total leg strengthening exercises, avoid dynamic valgus angles; can begin cardio
Patellar stabilizing brace for sports or strenuous activities
Progress muscle strength, endurance, and balance activities; begin sport specific training, if necessary.
