• Lateral epicondylitis (LE) is a painful condition characterized by pain over the outside part of the elbow where a tendon from the extensor carpi radialis brevis muscle attaches to the elbow
  • It effects approximately 4-7 out of 1000 people every year
  • Although most people respond to conservative management, chronic symptoms develop in 5-10% of patients and surgical intervention is eventually required.


  • Medically, Nerschl decribed the process as an "angiofibroblastic tendinosis that is degenerative in nature due to the lack of actue inflammatory cells."
  • Tissue biopsy shows tissue with granulation (scarring) and new small vessels and nerves
